Trump’s on another gender-bender
Editor: Now he’s really done it! Instead of focusing his
purportedly incomparable negotiating skills on bringing together the two
factions within the Republican Party to hash out differences on the Senate
Health Care bill, yesterday President Trump tweeted insults about “low I.Q.
Mika” (Brzezinski) and “crazy Joe” (Scarborough).
These anchors of a popular morning
news program on MSNBC often criticize the president and his appetite for
inappropriate tweets, as well as his administration’s inability to pass any
major legislation. So our president, in retaliation, personally attacked Mika’s
appearance, adding to his record of sexism by again criticizing a woman’s
looks.
In the past he has made crude
references to blood, weight, stamina and physical attributes regarding women he
deemed had insulted him in some way. Remember newscaster Megyn Kelly, former
Miss Universe Alicia Machado and presidential campaign opponent Hillary
Clinton?
Donald Trump has shown once again
his disdain for women. He has bragged about groping women, proudly commented on
his own daughter’s “voluptuous” figure, and denigrated female professionals
like Carly Fiorina, Arianna Huffington and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Our president is so insecure, he
takes all criticism of his administration and its policies personally and
retaliates in a demeaning and spiteful manner. Yet his aides and advisors
continue to applaud him.
They argue that he “fights back”
against unfair reporting. Members of Congress insist his inexperience is
largely responsible for his inappropriateness. His Cabinet is mum on the issue.
And therein lies the problem. The president apparently does whatever he wants.
His tweets subvert his agenda, yet none have the power to stop them. His
so-called advisors have apparently stopped trying.
This explosive, insulting tweeting
by our elected leader must stop! It is beneath the office of the presidency. It
is, quite frankly, beneath the dictates of common courtesy. It is crass,
bullying behavior by our commander-in-chief and it is an embarrassment to our
country.

Patel’s hotel, but it’s my neighborhood
Editor: So much is going on in my neighborhood. One writer believed
a parking lot was no big deal. Obviously, he doesn’t live in my neighborhood.
What is Patel asking for? He owns
five hotels in town already. He originally asked for a boutique hotel with
underground valet parking and he was granted an exception to the Historic
Preservation Code for that. I do not understand why. Why bother to have codes
if you are not going to follow them?
Now Patel wants to expand his hotel
and build a parking lot because the underground lot is too expensive. He will
not go bankrupt following the rules. If he doesn’t want to do it anymore, maybe
he could show stewardship and build St. Augustine a real nice park instead. Our
commissioners need to show the wealthiest of our citizenry that history,
neighborhoods and families are what matter in our town.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t
improve things. Bicycles and small shops were here before cars. A little
forethought could have put the trees along San Marco a little closer to the
curbs (and they can still be moved). This would make room for bicycle lanes
between the pedestrians and the cars.
And then we could improve the
parking on San Marco by removing the parallel parking and putting in slant
parking on the west side of the road. This would add parking places and make
their use friendly instead of slow and difficult.
Let’s save our historic
neighborhoods. The next one to go might be yours. We don’t need another study.
Let’s just use a little common sense, fiscal responsibility and compassionate,
progressive conservatism.
