If you want to help secure our democracy, there's a lot you can be working on these days.  Find  something you feel comfortable with and jump in.  It may well make a difference and you'll certainly feel better for it.

Let's keep writing those letters--you can help via Blue Wave Coalition or Sierra Club or Vote Forward.  Help get those people who are not in the habit of voting to either vote by mail or in person!

Can you help us Keep Our Children Safe?

Governor Ron DeSantis is working overtime to pressure local counties into moving into Phase 2 of reopening before they are ready. He is playing games with the data just to support his agenda.

Once the Governor forces South Florida counties (Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade) into Phase 2 of reopening, many South Florida public schools will also be forced to reopen one week later for in-person brick-and-mortar schooling, a very dangerous choice.

In the state of Florida, there have been 47,762 cases of COVID-19 in children since March 2020, with 596 that have been admitted to the hospital.

It is UNETHICAL and a risk to PUBLIC SAFETY to gather for in-person classes in Florida when pediatric cases are at their highest point EVER in the state and increasing at a alarming rate. In August alone, over 550 COVID positive children have been diagnosed EVERY DAY. Every single hour in Florida, 23 children are diagnosed with COVID.

We cannot allow our governor, who has repeatedly claimed that COVID does not impact children, to force local officials into putting our children in danger.

We must send a CLEAR message to our elected leaders that we want them to listen to our scientists and doctors about when and how we should reopen safely.

Governor DeSantis is overstepping. Local leaders should make the choice of when our communities are ready to enter the next phase of reopening. Local leaders have the power of Home Rule and need to exercise it NOW to prevent DeSantis from further harming our community and putting our teachers, children, and community at risk.

THEN--JUST FOR FUN!

COME VISIT WITH US ON A ZOOM FRIDAY AUGUST 28!

BRING YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE AND LET'S JUST
ENJOY EACH OTHER'S COMPANY.

HELLO  Zoom friends.  It's been quite some time since we've gotten together so it's about time we
TAKE the time to grab a cold beer, glass of wine, or for those who don't drink--water, coffee, tea. . .
whatever floats your boat.  Let's kick off Friday, August 28th at 7:00 pm with good cheer and good
friends catching up on what we've all been doing this summer.  Let's end the week on a good
note and begin the weekend on a high.  There's one stipulation and I know we can all agree on this...
since we will have been watching two National Conventions back-to-back and the barrage of political
discourse, we are  requesting we NOT discuss politics.  Let's keep the conversation on family, friends,
and what we've been doing to keep busy, like what books you'd recommend to read, what's new on
TV that's not known to everyone, gardening tips, etc. . .Maybe we can share ideas with one another
who are feeling bored.  Hope to see you on Friday, August 28th at 7 pm with drinks in hand and a smile on your face!

Sign up HERE and you will receive your Zoom link before the event.

MUST SEE!

"IMMIGRATION NATION" -- an original docuseries by Netflix

An ICE agent (right) exercises a warrant in Netflix's 'Immigration Nation.'

This  series came out just this month on Netflix.  It is definitely a must-see.  It is amazing what the Netflix crew was able to capture on tape.  The Trump administration tried to block its release until after the election.  It gives a picture of what it's like inside ICE, the attitudes of the ICE officials, and the experiences and heartbreaks of the immigrants.  It will induce anger, as well as tears.   It's a series of 6 episodes, one hour each and well worth every minute. (Editor's opinion)

These roads would increase Florida panther deaths, hastening their extinction.

The Alachua County Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday voted unanimously to reject plans to build new toll roads across the state.  We need to keep applying pressure to keep these roads from being built.

With the need for severe budget cuts,  it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the state needs to spend its precious tax dollars on critical state needs (education, public health, the unemployed, housing -- the list goes on and on) and should immediately stop wasting money on M-CORES.

See one article here.

What can we  do?  We can lobby the task force members (and here) directly.  We can write letters to the editor.  WE CAN LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD!
