Time to Pay Attention to What's Going On at the State Level!

This is from David Johnson who has been doing such a great job in tracking state legislation and maintaining a list of all the bills each year before the State Legislature.

Members of the 2021-2 Florida Legislature are being sworn in this week.  High on their list of priorities will be consideration of the Governor's proposed bill that will threaten and suppress citizens' rights to free assembly guaranteed by our Constitution and a re-balancing of the State Budget necessitated by the loss of jobs, tourism and revenue resulting from the ongoing pandemic.
Since there will be no 2021 Legislative Day event in Tallahassee next year, our focus must now turn to conducting virtual meetings with our legislators this January in advance of the 2021 session scheduled to begin March 2.
You are encouraged to form teams in collaboration with members of Unitarian Universalist congregations, your local Indivisible group, Sierra Club chapter and other like minded organizations such as LWV and NOW.  In your meetings you and others on your team will address selected items from the Legislative Agenda, share stories how proposed legislation affects you and your family and make your progressive voices heard.
Here is the link to the current version of the Legislative Agenda.  Check this link from time to time as it is subject to revision as we get closer to the legislative session

To learn more about the legislative process and tips for virtual meetings, please register here for the Legislative Training Workshop to be held December 2..

Please also share this link with others in your congregation or organization and encourage them to register as well.

             Legislative Delegation Meeting date announced

These are our state legislators:  Travis Hutson, Senator; Paul Renner, Rep. Dist. 24,Cyndi Stevenson, Rep. Dist. 17.  These are the people we need to attempt to influence to see any laws change in the State of Florida, and this is how we do the "Act Locally" part of "Think Globally, Act Locally"

This St. Johns County Legislative Delegation will hold a meeting on Friday, December 18, 2020, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the St Johns County Commission Chamber Auditorium, located at 500 San Sebastian View, St Augustine.

Discussion of issues regarding local legislation for the 2021 Legislative Session will be held at this time.  If you have something you want to promote to your most local representative, this is your chance.  (Your editor spoke last year promoting laws which are in accord with home rule.)

  • If you would like to participate in the meeting during the public comment section, please contact Representative Stevenson’s office.
  • To be placed on the agenda for the December 18th meeting please contact Representative Stevenson’s District Office prior to December 14th, 2020.
  • Those that would like to provide materials or handouts to the St Johns County Delegation members may mail or hand deliver them to Representative Stevenson’s District Office, located at 309 Kingsley Lake Drive Suite 902, St Augustine, FL 32092, before 12:00 noon on December 14th, 2020.

The proceedings will be available on GTV to watch live.  St Johns County Delegation meetings are open to the public.

Either as an individual or as representative of a group, I encourage you to attend, if nothing else for the educative value, and to let your reps know someone is paying attention.

BREAKING: Democrats Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock are BOTH heading to RUNOFF ELECTIONS in Georgia

The New York Times:  "If Democrats are able to win both seats, and if Joe Biden wins the presidency, they would have the 50 senators needed to usher through judicial and cabinet appointments, and enact a Democratic agenda."

"So we're launching a MASSIVE Voter Turnout Effort in Georgia to flood the polls with Democratic Voters, elect Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, and win control of the Senate."

Both Rev Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff are going to need every ounce of our energy. We can do this! Donate to either campaign through ActBlue or Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight. This would bring the senate count to 50/50. So donate, phone bank, text or go to GA and knock doors

Please continue the momentum for democracy. Make an emergency donation to Rev. Raphael Warnock's campaign and Jon Ossoff's campaign in Georgia to win a Democratic U.S. Senate.

So many people like you already did your part. We're tired. We're ready for a break (and soon you should take one). But we also need to help win these 2 Senate races. Please make a donation to them today.

Thanks for being a bold progressive.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT GOVERNOR DESANTIS?

When he first assumed office, I think many of us had some hope for him, which has now been dashed.  Your editor emailed him this morning (Friday)  and there is another writer who is urging our membership to do the same thing.  It's a good idea, for you know how close attention the good guv pays to his constituents!  (tongue in cheek!)

DeSantis remarked on Fox News that GOP legislatures in states where Joe Biden won "should maybe override their citizens' vote and declare Trump winner."  Just like a third world dictator, he is attempting to undermine our democracy.

He has signed on to the herd immunity theory, which has been discredited.  He has enlisted a conservative sports blogger from Ohio to downplay the Florida COVID 19 death count and discredit the state's data, data which is on the rise while he sits on his hands.

As our Governor, rather than being another Florida embarrassment,  he should be expressing pride and appreciation to our Supervisors of Elections in the quality job they did in providing a model for other states to emulate.

Please email or call him to express your knowledge and distress over his attempts to undermine democracy  and repudiate science.  A Letter to the Editor would be great.

We did it!  We may not have won the battle here in Florida, but we won the war nationally, and boasted  an 85% turnout of Dems in St Johns County.  We give thanks to the remarkable leadership of Robin Dion and Marie Garnes and greatly  appreciate their dedication, persistence, and hard work in leading the army of volunteers who called, texted, wrote letters and postcards and dropped campaign literature.  "It takes a village" and we were there!

Congratulations to Roxanne Horvath,  Barbara Blonder, Nicole Crosby, Mary Lawrence, Jane West, Gayle Gardner, Joan Anthony,  Anthony Coleman and Robert Olson, winners on the Blue Wave slate!

Georgia will have 2 special elections for U.S. Senate in January because no candidate won above 50%. Those two Senate seats would deliver the Senate to Democrats.  Runoff election:  Jan. 5, 2021; early voting begins December 14.

Please continue the momentum for democracy. Make an emergency donation to Rev. Raphael Warnock's campaign and Jon Ossoff's campaign in Georgia to win a Democratic U.S. Senate.

CURRENT ACTIONS:

GEORGIA SENATE RUNOFF -- January 5, 2021

Postcarding starts now.  Postcards must be mailed by December 7th.

*A requirement for this action is that you must purchase postcards specific to the Georgia Senate runoff.

Much of the nation is gong to be focused on Georgia in the next two months and
Georgians are likely to be overwhelmed.  We don't want our efforts to backfire,
so this effort with Reclaim Our Vote is specifically designed to reach their
targeted population: the postcard matches the billboards, the messaging
is non-partisan, and ROV is partnering with a GA-based grassroots organization
to make sure they are effective in turning out the vote.

Sign up for addresses & purchase postcards HERE.

Then get your stamps and Avery labels set to go (Avery #5160, e0
labels per sheet).
The deadline to mail these postcards is December 7.

Reclaim Our Vote will also be phone banking by mid-November,
and they will have an active and targeted billboard campaign
to turn out the vote for this all-important set of elections.
