"If a small Senate working group gets its way, 22 million Americans – a population two-thirds the size of Canada's and just a tad smaller than Australia's
– will lose health coverage by 2026. The Republican strongholds of
North Carolina, Oklahoma and Florida will be hardest hit by the coverage
cutbacks. More than 13 percent of North Carolina's population will
likely lose insurance coverage, the data indicate. In Oklahoma and
Florida, one of every 10 residents will likely lose their insurance."
"These calculations offer a window into the statewide impact of the
health reform plan drafted by a handful of Republican senators. They
were derived from national projections by the nonpartisan Congressional
Budget Office, which also found that the bill – now on hold until after
the July 4 recess – would hike health care costs for "most people" in
the U.S. It would dramatically increase out-of-pocket costs and would
price comprehensive health coverage beyond many people's reach. It would
allow states to waive insurers' obligations to cover critical health
services for the elderly, women, people with chronic diseases and those
with preexisting conditions."
