Local Reverend Ron Rawls of St. Paul AME Church has taken the lead
on demanding the removal of two Confederate monuments in downtown St.
Augustine. Rev. Rawls is not playing, he has given city leaders until
this Friday, August 25th, to remove the monuments. If the monuments are
not removed by Friday, Rev. Rawls is calling on local individuals and
groups to come to City Commission Meetings in protest and to speak until
the monuments are removed. The St. Augustine City Commission meets at
5:00pm on the second and fourth Mondays of each month in The Alcazar
Room, City Hall, 75 King St.
Indivisible St.
Johns stands in solidarity with Rev. Rawls and our members are
encouraged to attend the City Commission meetings if it comes to that
but what we need you to do IMMEDIATELY is to be vocal about where you
stand on this issue. Call, email and write the Commission members
(contact info below), write to the local paper, talk to your friends,
family and neighbors. Additionally, contact the President of University
of Florida, as the Loring Memorial stands on their property.
We
heard from our membership at our 8/21/17 General Meeting that our
membership wants another Anti-hate Action. Our Steering Committee meets
again on Monday 8/28 and we will begin planning for this event, more
details to come.
