RON DESANTIS IS AFRAID OF THE TRUTH
Teachers must rise up
and defy the dystopian society Governor Ron DeSantis has visited upon Florida public
schools, teachers, administrators, superintendents and school boards. What a
beastly regulation indeed!
Mr. Governor Freedom
is pandering to the misinformed erudite. He misrepresents any suggestion of freedom.
Freedom is a right. It also gives power. DeSantis distorts our rights assuming
he has power over curriculum taught in public schools. He does not. One
remembers reading of Hitler changing school curriculum to fit his Aryan-only
ideology. DeSantis promotes an ideology of fear. I do not fear this person who
cares nothing for students or anyone in Florida unless they buy into his
ideology of fear. He believes fear will
obfuscate societal and cultural critical thinking.

We
learned Manatee County is using Federal COVID funds to purchase “appropriate”
books after teachers stripped shelves of their professionally chosen books.
·
Duval
County banned the book by Latino baseball great, Roberto Clemente, then
reinstated it after this news went nationwide.
·
Banned
from Duval County: Letters From The
Birmingham Jail by Dr. Martin Luther King. To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Diary of Anne Frank and The
Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison.
·
HB 1467
requires districts to catalog all books in schools. Mr. Governor Freedom denies
this fact. Perhaps he doesn’t remember?
Better watch out,
preschool teachers. Reading Pat The Bunny
to your students might result in banning the book due to the implications about
patting.
Kindergarten teachers
will think twice about reading, The
Little Engine That Could to students. Cautions believing aspiring to heights beyond
your station is acceptable when living Orwell’s 1984.
Threatened classics
that may be removed from shelves: Herman Melville, Stephen Crane, Alexis de
Tocqueville, Mark Twain, J. R.R. Tolkien, Franz Kafka, Poe, Stowe, Carroll,
Morrison, et al. Remember when the Nazis burned classics? Banning and burning
books is cowardly.
It is said, “We must
be better than the beasts.”
