We have a lot to discuss this month! We are going local and going strong with a detailed legislative plan and process. One of our first issues to tackle is the environment. Mandarin

The Indivisible movement has planned a National Day of Action on Thursday, January 3, 2019, the new Congress' first day back in session. The theme of the day is “Whose House? Our House!”.   Indivisible Mandarin is participating in this event and has booked a time slot from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. for members to meet in a small group with Rep. Rutherford's staffer, Amanda Wallace, J.D. Please join us to discuss the new reality in Washington as control of the House of Representatives switches to the Democrats. Through dialogue with Ms. Wallace, we will urge Rep. Rutherford to join in bipartisan efforts to improve our current situation and encourage him to support H.R.1,  a bill containing measures which protect and enhance voting and the democratic process. We will also discuss the importance of Rep. Rutherford representing ALL of the people of our district and talk to him about the diverse reality of the district. ATTORNEY GENERAL NOMINEE WILLIAM BARR WOULD BE A NIGHTMARE FOR THE OPEN INTERNET

President Trump’s top pick for Attorney General is an ex-Verizon lawyer–like Ajit Pai. If confirmed, he would be bad news for Internet freedom and privacy.

Barr has a bad track record of putting telecom giants and government spies ahead of Internet users. In the past he’s supported massive telecom mergers, and fought to expand warrantless access to  Internet. But we can stop his confirmation if we can get 51 Senators to vote against him. Sign the petition to tell the Senate: Do not appoint William Barr as Attorney General.

HEADS UP. Fish Island currently on City Agenda for PZB meeting for Tree Removal January 8.

There is an agenda item on the 8 Jan 2019 PZB meeting for tree removal to support the Fish Island development.  If you think that housing development on the Fish Island parcel is not a good thing, you should let the PZB and City Commission know sooner rather than later.  Otherwise, Fish Island could soon be sleeping with the fishes...

The AoC Checklist features clear, well-researched actions for Americans who value democracy, equality, voting, and decency. We practice gratitude, self-care, and celebration to stay engaged.

Spread the light this season: Below are our suggestions for how to do good while giving for the holidays. When you choose among these action options, you can print out the receipt and wrap it up as a gift for someone you love. 

I value democracy.

With respect and collaboration, we create a government for the people, by the people.

▢ Action 1: Purchase quality journalism for your loved ones.Give the gift of quality journalism and trustworthy news. Consider:

• The Atlantic monthly

I value equality.

Stand with your rainbow of neighbors from every religion, race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, age, and ability. Out of many, we are one.

People who immigrate are fellow human beings whom we treat with respect and decency. We oppose inhumane treatment and vilification of people who immigrate and the government bodies that perpetuate it.

• New surveys show that black voters and Latinx voters participated more in 2018 midterm elections and measurably influenced outcomes.
• A new study shows that one in six U.S. health care workers are foreign born, a number that has remained stable for a decade.
• Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will pay her interns at least $15/hr, departing from norm.
• UN member states adopt the Global Compact for Migration, the first-ever agreement on a common approach to international migration, providing all migrants with safe access to basic services.
• A federal court in San Francisco temporarily blocks the Trump administration’s new asylum ban.
• The U.S. Supreme Court protects lower court rulings that states cannot defund Planned Parenthood by withholding Medicaid payments.
• Ruling: Arizona must pay legal costs after groups successfully challenged its former governor’s executive order prohibiting DACA recipients from obtaining drivers’ licenses.

• Denver Public Library supports immigrants and refugees with citizenship, English, and art classes, providing a model for other localities.
• Two more newly-elected North Carolina sheriffs end agreements to divert local resources to ICE.
• A program in Portland, OR experiments with intergenerational living to ensure affordable housing for foster families and seniors.
• Brooklyn NY District Attorney helps people erase their low-level marijuana convictions.
• New York City sets the country’s first minimum pay rate for Uber and Lyft drivers to ensure drivers’ rights to a living wage.

• Out magazine appoints transgender activist Raquel Willis as executive editor.
• Marriott employees end the largest hotel worker strike in U.S. history after the company agreed to wage increases and protections against sexual harassment and assault.

Groups and organizations

• Honoring National Human Rights Day, the National Immigrant Justice Center shared ways they protected human rights in 2018, including fighting indefinite detentions, reuniting families, and freeing transgender asylum seekers detained at the border.
• The Anti-Defamation League publishes a groundbreaking online mapping tool to inform readers about hate in their communities.

News with heart

• 97-year-old civil-rights pioneer Rosanell Eaton was honored this week after her passing. She successfully challenged North Carolina voting restrictions all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Her life is an inspiration.
• Mary Golda Ross, the country’s first Native American female engineer, will be featured on the new $1 coin.
• Hundreds of faith leaders gather at the U.S.-Mexico border fence to advocate for the rights of migrants.
• December 6th marked the 153rd birthday of the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude.
• Religious leaders gathered in San Diego in support of migrants’ rights to enter the U.S. with a press conference and march to border.

International Day of Human Rights Declaration Event 12/10/18 7PM

The event honors the 70^th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Residents from St. Johns, Flagler and Putnam Counties will join the international experience at The United Church (UCC – DOC), 5880 U.S. 1 south in St. Augustine, Monday, Dec. 10,  7:00PM.

Readings of individual Human Rights by local participants will be posted online by the United Nations. America’s key role in creating the Universal Declaration will set the stage for a community reading of the 30 Human Rights. St. Augustine’s contributions to human rights will be highlighted to an international audience. Participants will identify violations of human rights in St. Johns, Flagler and Putnam Counties for future action The event is sponsored by The United Church, Compassionate St. Augustine and Indivisible St. Johns.
