INDIVISIBLE ST JOHNS NEWSLETTER OF ACTION WEEK OF AUGUST 19
This week’s policy rundown from Indivisible:
· The Senate is expected to vote on another
government funding bill next week. The bill, which will cover the Departments of Labor, Health and
Human Services, and Defense, could include amendments that are harmful to
immigrants (e.g. allowing the indefinite detention of families). We’ll keep you
up-to-date on any developments as the appropriations process moves forward.
· A court in Texas will rule on the legality of
DACA next week.Texas Attorney General
Ken Paxton is leading a lawsuit that argues that the DACA program is illegal.
Judge Andrew S. Hanen of the Federal District Court in Houston is expected to
hand down his decision by August 23; once he does, we’ll let you know what that
means for the hundreds of thousands of Dreamers who are currently in limbo.
· There could be an announcement about NAFTA
renegotiation by the end of August. A deal would have to be reached by this time in order to
satisfy the mandatory Congressional notification period before the new Mexican
administration takes office on December 1. (But Canada has not been a part of
this round of negotiations.) If they are able to reach an agreement before
then, we’ll be sure to share the important points.
· Visit trumpthreatlevel.indivisible.org for a running list of all the ways
Trump makes us less safe this week, including his decision to revoke
security clearance for targeted officials, and his stalled push for a dictator-inspired
“military parade”. Learn more and review our latest foreign policy
resources to take action.
