Indivisible St Johns Newsletter Week of February 10, 2019

YOUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER OF ACTION
WEEK OF FEBRUARY 10,2019

ISJ General Meeting February 7

Dr Jen Cowart, MD, gave a great presentation on Why Medicaid Expansion would be good for Florida. She offered a data based discussion of not just the morality but the economic benefit to our state. Principally, our tax dollars are going to states that accepted expanded Medicaid.  Most have shown positive outcomes in cost savings and health. In Florida alone, around 1.3 million residents would be eligible for expanded Medicaid, including well over 300,000 adults who currently have no insurance coverage. Medicaid Expansion would help in these ways:
Improved health outcomes, including earlier cancer diagnoses
Early and less complicated cases ending up at the hospitals
Mental health services, including medication and counseling
Opioid treatment and smoking cessation medications covered
Reduced health disparities across race, income, educational and employment status

Although the Federal Government offered to pay 100% for the expansion until 2020, our previous governor rejected the offer. Starting in 2020, the Feds will pay 90% with Florida having to come up with 10%. If Medicaid can be expanded, final savings to the state in the first year are projected to be $500 million.

Actions to take:
              Petition drive, currently underway.
If successful, GOTV for the vote
If successful, any tax increase now needs 2/3 of the legislature so there’s still work to do
If legislature tries to insert work requirements, oppose. They are a barrier to coverage.

ISJ is helping with the Medicaid Expansion Petition Drive
Andrea Degeorge explained our progress.  ISJ was active at the St Augustine Farmers Market on Saturday February 2.  Members got 150 petitions signed - a good contribution to the overall state effort!   She outlined future public actions:
2/9 at both the Main and SE Branch libraries
2/23 at the Saturday Farmers Mkt
              2/16 a possibility, TBD
Contact Andrea DeGeorge if you can spare some hours. andrea.degeorge@gmail.com

The group was treated to a video of Amy Goldin’s original poem "Switchback on empowered women!”  Check it out at checkout  https://youtu.be/44RKM16Yx2Y

New ISJ legislative advocacy task group.  ISJ members plan to visit their State representatives to speak about priority issues.  They are going to see Rep Cyndi Stevenson Florida House of Representative for the 17th district the week of 2/10.  Contact Andrea Degeorge if you're interested in participating in this important work (andrea.degeorge@gmail.com)

ISJ participated in a Equality Florida Training/Event in St Augustine with Equality Florida, Indivisible St. Johns, and Women's March St. Johns.  The training discussed the LGBTQIA community not feeling safe and comfortable in St Augustine.

Indivisibles. WE HAVE ONE JOB TO DO: drop literature bags in Precinct 208 on October 13. Sign up and show up!

Precinct 208 is Armstrong, Elkton and surrounding rural areas. We found during Vote by Mail canvassing that it's best to have a driver with the VAN app installed to map out and find the next house easily. The rider can do the door knocking/literature drop and use the paper sheets to document if the driver doesn't have time. Data can be input at the end. It's easy and fast. So, we know many of you are already doing multiple canvasses but this precinct is on US. It's couple hours on a Saturday. We meet at Armstrong Park which is shaded and has tables and bathrooms. We need about a dozen people and will have all the bags and lists ready for you. Just sign up and show up Please!!!

Go to October 13 on the calendar and click on the light blue Indivisible St Johns tab. It will give you details and a link to sign up so we know how many are coming.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!!!! You will find EVERY BWC volunteer opportunity on this calendar. Phone banks, bag drop canvasses, poll greeting, fund raisers, and many other election-related volunteer opportunities. At this time, we urge you to sign up for a bag drop canvass!
Open the calendar, click on the arrow to the right of "today" to get to the month you wish to see, peruse the activities and click on the activity you are interested in. You'll see a brief description and in most cases a Signup Genius link will appear at the bottom of the description.
Click on the Signup Genius link, scroll down until you see the slot you wish to volunteer for. A box saying "Sign Up" will appear to the right of slot, check that box until a check mark appears. Then scroll to the very bottom of the Signup and click on "Submit and Sign Up." That's it! You will receive a reminder two days before the event.
We have an amazing plan. You are the key to implementing it. Thank you again. If you have a problem, you can contact the BWC Volunteer Coordinator at joanne.pero@gmail.com."

Our NEFL Indivisibles get a mention, finally, in the Folio and our canvassing yesterday in Precinct 208

Here's the link to the Folio piece mentioning us as persistently visiting our MoCs:
https://folioweekly.com/stories/more-cheddar-please,20554?category_id=7&sub_type=stories,packages,whatdoyouthink

And here's a picture of us after knocking on doors in Armstrong and Elkton. We still have work to do there. Stay tuned for next canvas opportunity and come out with us. Our neighbors in the SW have been taken for granted for far too long. Trish Becker, Laura Braly and Mary Lawrence.

Indivisible Newsletter Week of September 23 and ACTIVE MEASURES screening coming October 4 at the UU here!

YOUR WEEKLY RESISTANCE NEWSLETTER
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 23, 2018

SAVE THE DATE! OCTOBER 4, 2018

The new documentary,  Active Measures (2018), directed by Jack Bryan,  will be shown Thursday, October 4, by Indivisible St Johns upstairs at the UU Fellowship 2487 A1A S, St Augustine, FL 32080.  Doors open 6 pm, film begins 6:30 with intermission  and refreshments.

In ACTIVE MEASURES, Bryan exposes a 30-year history of covert political warfare devised by Vladimir Putin to disrupt, influence, and ultimately control world events, democratic nations through cyber attacks, propaganda campaigns, and corruption. In the process, the filmmakers follow a trail of money, real estate, mob connections, and on the record confessions to expose an insidious plot that leads directly back to The White House. Unraveling the true depth and scope of "the Russia story," as we have come to know it, it is a jarring reminder that some conspiracies hide in plain sight. ACTIVE MEASURES is essential viewing in today's world. The film was released six days after the death of Senator John McCain.

Suggested Donation $10.00
