Here's what happened last night at Indivisible St Johns' General Membership meeting. Welcome to our new members!

GENERAL MEETING
APRIL 5, 2018
Minutes

MOSQUITO CONTROL CANDIDATE:
Jim Henry welcomed our members and introduced Trish Becker, candidate for Mosquito Control District 4. Trish spoke of her passion for getting involved politically after the 2016 election and pledged to work for the people of our county.
Jim introduced Jamie Perkins, candidate for state representative District 17, Cindy Stevenson’s seat. She also spoke of her desire to get involved after the election and is a rare lifelong resident of St Augustine. She is still collecting signatures to qualify.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE WEEKEND: Bill McCormick and John Pileski outlined the events for 4/13-4/14, the 4th year this event is being held. Friday evening there will be refreshments provided by Rype and Redi prior to a presentation from Audubon on shorebirds and an intergenerational discussion. This goes from 5PM to 9PM at the Gallimore Center in St Augustine.
Saturday’s events include an all day family friendly vendor fair featuring many groups, food and live music. This has always been a hugely successful event for our area.

SPRING FUNDRAISING: Mary Lawrence explained the new links on our Facebook page and at the head of our weekly emailed calendar. Funds are critically needed as we head into election season for printing, meeting costs and permits for large meetings. She suggested recurring payments of $5/month and also noted for people who are not comfortable donating online that Indivisible St Johns still maintains a bank account and can always accept check and cash at our events.

CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE FORUM: Jim Henry introduced the 3 candidates running for CD04, Rutherford’s seat in Congress.

Joceline Berrios is a former public school teacher. Her concerns involve guns in schools, public education and equal and fair pay. She said her main priority is to impeach Trump and Pence. Her website is www.berrios4congress.com and she is accepting donations and needs volunteers.

Monica DePaul is a former college professor and the first trans candidate to run in our area. Her priorities concern gun violence, student debt, fair pay and unions. Her website is www.monica4florida.com and she too is accepting donations and needs volunteers. A fundraiser is scheduled for 4/22 at Rain Dogs in Jax, details to be announced.

Ges Selmont is a father with a varied professional background with an early exposure to pay inequity and organizing. He has been campaigning for 5 weeks already and states he sees a growing resistance to Trump’s agenda. His priorities would be building a NEFL coalition of Representatives to address the climate, quality of life and infrastructure issues on the First Coast. His website is www.ges4congress.com and he too accepts donations.

A question and answer period followed.

Joan McGinnis noted in closing that the next Indivisible St Johns’ SOCIAL is Friday 4/20 at 7PM at a new location: Old City Market on Anastasia Blvd. She also reminded everyone of the weekly postcard party at DOS, every Thursday at 2PM. This is an active and determined group that has done incredible work for over a year.

Meeting adjourned approx. 910PM.
Mary Lawrence
